I've been struggling with whether or not I should make this post. This blog is mainly about the latest on my artistic output. I prefer to keep the negative at bay. But in my long absence I feel it only fair to let my followers know just what's been going on with me.

I am not well. I've been battling with an illness that so far has the doctors stumped. Life has been dominated by countless doctors' appointments and tests. I have little energy and am in great pain most of the day. It keeps me away from the things I love most. It keeps me away from my passion of creating. I haven't stepped foot in the studio in months.

So I will try to attempt at finishing something new when I can, but if things continue this way, my offerings this year will be precious few. I only hope that isn't the case.

Thank you to each and every one of you for continuing to follow and support me, it means so very much to me! Be well.

NBC plans to redo The Munsters.

It'll be a drama, not a comedy like the 1960's series I absolutely adored growing up. Not sure how I feel about this; I really don't think they can outdo the original. But, I will of course be watching, for better or for worse.

I have to admit, I'm on the edge of my sofa cushion when anything with a paranormal/occult/hell-anything-spookyish theme premieres on the tube. Comfy lounge pants - check. Bowl of snackage - check. Wide-eyed, gleeful anticipation - check.

Please NBC, just do this sacred monstrous sitcom justice.

There's only 12 days left 'til Halloween and all the preparations are finally finished except for the pumpkin carving, which will be done this weekend (I have 9 pumpkins to sacrifice!). This is the last creepy creation being offered before the big day, as I'm going out of town to spend some time with my daughter engaging in some frightfully fun festivities in her area.

This week's offering is a creepy cool Unwelcome sign to warn all those who visit your haunt this season! Features etched-in wording and 'cracks' as well as a skull cabachon and 2 gargoyles! I painted the entire piece to give it the look of stone and provided hardware on back for easy hanging. Measures an impressive 30" across!

The outside of the crate should've warned me of the impending scare, or at the very least provided a small packet containing a heart pill 'cuz this is what I encountered when I flung open both sides of the box simultaneously in my childlike excitement! I've been wanting to add this animated prop, called Bernard the Butler (from Grandin Road), to my haunt this year mainly because he quotes 'The Raven' and the li'l black bird on his shoulder also squawks 'Nevermore'.....being the Poe nutter that I am, I couldn't resist! We were given an Easter surprise that was sweeter than any chocolate bunny!
Our third grandchild, Daemian Bryan, was born 5 weeks early yesterday - weighing in at 5lbs. 11 oz. and measuring nearly 19" long. Although he was so early, he's doing fantastic! No need of an incubator and not a touch of jaundice. Both he and mama are doing great!!

I think gremlins now have complete reign over my blog. For several weeks I've been trying to figure out why my right sidebar has dropped below the posts. I've searched blogger's forums for answers. I've gone through the posts with their suggestions. I've taken many measures, all to no avail. I am still stumped - still frustrated - and now I am reaching out to all of you in hopes that one of my brilliant followers can come to the rescue!

Yummy Scrummy Traditional Dish!

Colcannon

This is a dish I look forward to every Halloween season! Nowadays, with the internet, you'll find many variations of this recipe (though they don't seem to differ a whole lot) but today I am sharing our family version, which has been handed down for generations. It's super simple and super delicious so serve up this traditional dish to all the creatures in your household, they'll be goblin it down! hehe, couldn't help myself

INGREDIENTS:

4 c. mashed potatoes

2 1/2 c. cabbage, cooked and finely chopped

1/2 c. butter (do not use margarine!)

1/2 c. evaporated milk or cream (I prefer the evap)

1/4 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. white pepper

Saute onion in butter. Make mashed potatoes as usual (do not use potato flakes! Afterall, they didn't have such in the Olde World). In a large pan, place all the ingredients except the cabbage. Cook over low heat and blend thoroughly. Turn the heat to medium and add the cabbage. Stir occasionally until completely heated through. Serves 8.

This time of year I shamelessly indulge in all the pumpkiney goodies I can - pumpkin shakes, pumpkin fudge, pumpkin ice cream the list goes on. Whipping up a batch of pumpkin pancakes on ALL HALLOW'S EVE morning is an absolute must and a tradition my family looks forward to. So today I'm sharing my recipe for this festive favorite! Enjoy!

Pumpkin Pancakes

Whisk 1 1/4c flour, 2 Tbs. sugar, 2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. each cinnamon, ground ginger, and salt, 1/8 tsp. nutmeg, and a pinch of ground cloves. In a separate bowl, mix 1 egg, 6 Tbs. pumpkin puree, 2 Tbs. melted butter, and 1 c. milk; fold into dry ingredients. Heat a buttered skillet over medium heat; pour in 1/4 c. batter for each pancake. Cook about 3 minutes per side; serve with butter and maple syrup.

The Bat

The bat is one of my favorite Halloween symbols.

It's long-time association with the darker side of folklore and superstition no doubt has much to do with its habits of nocturnal flight and roosting in places such as caves and old, ghostly ruins. Not to mention the fact that this is a furry li'l mouse with razor-sharp teeth!

There are many superstitions attached to this creature. A bat that flies thrice around a house, crashes into a windowpane, or flies inside of a house is supposed to be an omen of death for one of the occupants. If a bat shows up inside a church during a wedding ceremony, it is an omen that the marriage is surely doomed. Bats have been used to forecast weather and in some cultures it was once believed that bats were actually witches in disguise! If a bat was seen flying straight up in to the sky and then dropping back to Earth, this was a sign that the witching hour had arrived.

Luckily for the bat, just as it has sinister associations in many parts of the world, there are other places that regard the bat as a good omen. In Poland and China, the bat symbolizes happiness and longevity. They are greatly respected by the Australian aborigines, who dare not harm or kill a bat in the belief that doing so takes years off one's life. In some cultures, the bat is regarded as a symbol of protection & rebirth and bringer of good luck.

I, for one, don't see these misunderstood creatures as menacing maniacs in the least. To me, they are awe-inspiring, even magical. I enjoy the aerial antics of these tiny dancers and I sport an outdoor bat house during the season these li'l guys return to my area. I've had occupants in the Bats Motel every summer. You should see the looks that sometimes gets....hehe.

Serve Up Some Witches' Brew!

Around our house, serving up some witches' brew on ALL HALLOWS EVE is an absolute must! Here are a couple variations of one of our favorite seasonal sippers. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

1 - 6oz. package orange gelatin

1/2 to 1 c. sugar

2 c. boiling water

1 - 46 oz. can apricot nectar

1 - 46 oz. pineapple juice

3/4 c. lemon juice

4 ltr. ginger ale, chilled

In a large bowl, dissolve gelatin and sugar in water. Stir in the apricot nectar, pineapple juice and lemon juice. Freeze in two 2-qt. freezer containers. Remove from the freezer 2 to 3 hours before serving. Place contents of one container in a punch bowl; mash with potato masher. Stir in the ginger ale just before serving. Repeat. Yield: about 8 quarts.

Ingredients:

1 - 46 oz. can pineapple juice, divided

1 - 3 oz. pkg. orange gelatin

1 - 64 oz. carton orange juice

1 litr. ginger ale, chilled

1 qt. orange sherbet

In a saucepan, bring 1 cup of pineapple juice to a boil. Stir in gelatin until dissolved. Cool; transfer to a large container. Add orange juice and remaining pinapple juice. Chill. Just before serving, pour into a punch bowl; add ginger ale and mix well. Top with scoops of sherbet. Yield: 20-24 servings.

Tips: Place punch bowl in a hallowed out pumpkin shell for an extra festive flair! Serve with gummy bugs or candy corn frozen in ice cubes! Don't forget the Halloween-themed cups and straws!

I had a huuuge crush on the vampire BARNABAS COLLINS, and now my favoritis actor in the whole wild woild will be playing this cult classic - be still my beating heart!!

Been spending oodles of hours with RAEDYN, who's 22 months now and full of wonderment, and I'm in heaven just savoring every magical moment with her. Her curiosity is endless in wanting to know the whys and wherefores of the world - how a firefly glows, why the moon is orange as it peeks up over the pines, how a chipmunk holds sooooo much in his cheeks. She's a downright li'l chatterbox and has me giggling with her silly antics and clever observations like I'm a wee child myself. She counts everything (all the way up to 20 now!) and sings her ABC's to near perfection. There's nary a color in the crayon box that she doesn't know and Grover is her favorite Sesame Street character. If I'm not working away in my studio, she's probably the reason why. And a good one at that!

I haven't posted in almost a month and I have to give a heartfelt 'thank you' to each and every one of you who are still following! There are no excuses, I've just simply been soaking up every precious summer-vacation moment with my family that I possibly can doing the usual (and in some cases the very unusual!). One must prioritize, and although HALLOWEEN is always in the back of my mind, and I try to get in the studio late at night when the whirligig of the daytime craziness settles down to a hush, I find that these familial follies are simply too dear to compromise. So I tip my hat to you, faithful follower and bid you 'stay tuned' to see what's been cookin', as I will soon be posting some creepy cute creations that have long-awaited to see the light of day!

I've been sneeking fleeting moments of creating in between gardening & basking in the sun, graduation festivities & parties, and shabby chic household projects that would make MARTHA STEWART proud. And of course there's always the welcomed swarm of family & friends that come to spend Kodak moments on the weekends. In the midst of the craziness that is my life, I've actually managed to finish the last of my 2010 HALLOWEEN PARTY LINE line, which includes such seasonal favorites as noisemakers & domroo drums, treat buckets & trinket boxes, and party hats & candy cones. Every year is a different style to keep 'em guessing in ghoulish anticipation. It's really got me in the HALLOWEEN hoopla frame of mind - but then again, when am I not??!

I wonder if anyone's up to dressing in costume for the MEMORIAL DAY cookout.......hehe, maybe not.

And here I go, having my attentions diverted yet again by the seductive sunshine! Here in northeastern Wisconsin the summers are very short so one must savor every moment and take in the visually stunning beauty of all that mother nature has to offer! I've been busy planting my herb and flower gardens, as well as setting up all the bird, squirrel and bat houses and feeders. Yes, you read that right. BAT. I have a bat house that finds an inhabitant or two every summer! What else would you expect from a HALLOWEEN folk artist?! And speaking of art, never fear.........I've been sneaking snippets of creative time in here and there and will be unveiling the latest within the coming weeks!
